Curriculum

In the Primary School, we have taken the UK National Curriculum for England and sequenced it into a series of subject-specific, comprehensive Scope & Sequence documents, which we teach through the pedagogy of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). ell as their all-important academic needs.  The Dutch stream, an integral part of our school history and culture, also bases their curriculum on the PYP. Both streams teach their respective national curriculums for English and Mathematics but apply the PYP pedagogical approach of inquiry based learning to these areas of the curriculum where possible. In each case the school has adapted these curriculum requirements to its international setting to ensure its relevance to our student population.

The Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – 9) section of the Secondary School utilises the British National Curriculum as its framework whilst also integrating learning ideas that promote independent learning and strong research skills. In Year 10 and 11 we offer a combination of GCSE and IGCSE examinations, while we offer the IB Diploma Programme as our pre-university qualification.

Based on the University of Durham ‘Value Added’ scores, our students on average achieve in the 90th percentile (better than 90% of their peers) on their examinations.

NCBIS strives to provide a holistic education based on the types of learning we feel is important for students in the 21st century; international mindedness, the attributes and attitudes of the IB Learner Profile, and a highly meta-cognitive approach to teaching and learning form the foundation of our instructional programmes.

Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA)

ECA is a crucial time for your child’s development, it gives him/her the opportunity to contribute or diversify their interests and skills in an extracurricular activity or club.

By allowing and encouraging your child to participate in activities outside of the classroom, you’re giving them a route to make new friends, develop new interests, and deepen their social and intellectual growth.

Each teacher is responsible for leading one after school activity a week, which will last for an hour. These activities generally reflect a particular hobby or interest that a teacher has and wishes to share with the students. Currently, we offer football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, swimming, jewelry making, International Award, languages, art & craft, cooking, dance, drama, hockey and golf, to name a few. The school participates in several sporting leagues, both locally and internationally. It is also involved in the Model United Nations programme.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

The vast majority of our students come from affluent backgrounds. The school sees it as part of its mission to help educate students about the needs of others, particularly those less fortunate than themselves. As a result of this a school wide programme of community service is an integral part of who we are as a school, with students involved in regular fund raising and service activities.

Educational Visits

A key feature of our educational programme is to provide opportunities for learning outside the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to organise educational visits to compliment their teaching programmes. The Dutch school has an annual family picnic, while the Primary School has residential trips to Cyprus and PGL in the UK. Day visits occur termly for all year groups in the Primary and Dutch School and are viewed as an essential part of the curriculum. The secondary school operates a Challenges Week, during which students have the choice of a wide range of local and overseas educational residential visits. Recent international trips have seen groups traveling to Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, China, England, New York, Cyprus, Uganda, Japan, Jordan and Thailand.
